– Serving on the council gives you the opportunity to serve in a leadership position in the field of PM&R. With a variety of opportunities, such as helping organize our yearly conference, creating educational content for PM&R residents, working with our Mentorship Program to connect medical students and residents, generating social media content or working on our podcast, hopefully you will be able to find a position that fits your strengths and passions. Please see below for more information regarding the roles of each leadership position on the council.

LEADERSHIP POSITIONS

The vision of the American Osteopathic College of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is that we are dedicated to providing leadership for the PM&R profession and to providing a home to osteopathic PM&R practitioners.

  • Serve as the head of the Resident Council Executive Committee;
  • Chair, preside, and communicate with the Resident Council via a monthly teleconference to ensure continual quality improvement & communication among the Resident Council as well as personally attend relative committee teleconferences; 
  • Exercise general charge and supervision of the affairs of the Resident Council and perform such other duties as assigned by the AOCPMR Executive Council; 
  • Oversee Resident Council Officers and ensure that the duties of these officers are appropriately performed; 
  • Be available to Resident members to answer all Resident questions and concerns; 
  • Advocate for Resident members; 
  • See that rules and regulations set forth by the Resident Constitution & Bylaws are upheld; 
  • Serve on relevant AOCPMR Committees and ensure that other Residents serving on those committees work to maximize Resident opportunities and resources; 
  • Assist Resident Council officers in identifying activities and opportunities to strengthen camaraderie among PM&R residents; 
  • Present a summary of all Resident Council activity to the AOCPMR Executive Council each year at the AOCPMR Mid-Year Meeting; 
  • Sees that resources are used wisely at all levels to benefit Resident members; 
  • Lobby for increased funding for residents from the AOCPMR Executive Council and from supporters in conjunction with the AOCPMR Executive Council;  
  • Work to increase Resident membership; 
  • Increase tangible incentives for residents to become AOCPMR members; 
  • Write a presidential address for posting on the AOCPMR website; 
  • Oversee, review, update and amend the Resident Constitution and Bylaws yearly; 
  • Review nominations for the Resident Council in conjunction with the Executive Committee  and appoint Resident officers;
  • Sit on the AOCPMR Executive Council as the Resident Council President; 
  • Assist the AOCPMR Executive Council with implementing new nationwide initiatives.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Executive Committee;
  • In the absence of the President, or in the event of his or her disability, perform those duties of the President;
  • Assumes the position of President, if President is rendered incapable or found incapable of fulfilling duties; and
  • Report to the President at least monthly; 
  • Attend Resident Council meetings and participate in all Resident Council conference calls as well as relevant AOCPMR Committee meetings.
  • Assist Chair in all duties as requested; 
  • Oversee the distribution of the end-of-year survey to graduating members to capture future and encourage continued membership;
  • Attend the Student Council monthly teleconference meetings to provide Resident Council updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Executive Committee
  • Be present for Resident Council and relevant Committee meetings to take minutes and distribute these minutes to Resident Council, AOCPMR Executive Council and Executive Director; 
  • Retrieve and distribute contact information for members, mentors, speakers, etc. as requested from the President; 
  • Collect and distribute information from Executive Director as requested by the President and AOCPMR Executive Council; 
  • Distribute national forms such as membership applications, bylaws, etc. as requested by Resident Council and by resident members; 
  • Report at least monthly to President; and 
  • Be responsible for input into the budget process for the Resident Council, as decided upon by the AOCPMR Executive Council;
  • Have the authority to direct the purchase of material for completion of business of the Resident Council, as approved by the Resident budget for that year;
  • Provide the President with budget report & balance sheet before each national meeting; and
  • Seek to expand financial resources for the Resident Council.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Executive Committee;
  • Assist the transition of the newly elected President into office; and
  • Assist with Resident Council projects as applicable
  • Attend each monthly teleconference to act as a resource and help to the current Executive Committee.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Membership Committee;
  • Work to recruit all osteopathic PM&R residents to the AOCPMR, and encourage their active participation in the AOCPMR  as well as attendance at national meetings;
  • Identify new osteopathic Residents entering residency and recruit those new Residents for membership in the AOCPMR;
  • Establish & maintain relationships with each assigned PM&R residency program;
  • Develop and articulate the value of the AOCPMR to its Resident members;
  • Work to expand the number of Resident members through innovative programs and initiatives and increasing incentives for joining; 
  • Improve Resident opportunities within PM&R and increase awareness of the AOCPMR within Resident programs; 
  • Develop strategies and programs to help program representatives raise awareness of AOCPMR and fund outreach programs;
  • Facilitate open communication between Residents and the AOCPMR in order to better meet the needs of its Resident members;
  • Attend Membership Committee meetings and participate in all Membership Committee conference calls, as well as Resident Council meetings & conference calls; 
  • Maintain a current list of all Program Ambassadors that is electronically accessible; and
  • Provide a monthly report of the Membership Committee’s activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Membership Committee, but are not expected to attend monthly teleconference calls; 
  • Distribute information from AOCPMR to the residents in their respective residency program;
  • Serve as a local contact for regional events;
  • Provide a list of active Residents in their program, including their contact information;
  • Be Residents of an ACGME-accredited residency program.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Member Services Committee;
  • Develop the Project ASK! mission and vision to continually reflect the needs of the AOCPMR membership base;
  • Correspond with AOCPMR Membership committee and their delegation (committee chair, sub chairs, regional representatives, and program representatives) to update the Project ASK! Contact list as well as the ASK! map as reflected by current AOCPMR residency membership committee recruitment;
  • Facilitate the communication of student members and the appropriate program representatives with the assistance of the regional representatives.  This will include initiation and verification/conclusion of communication;
  • Maintain, update, and further refine the current ASK! online components including with the assistance of the AOCPMR membership, social media, education, and website committees:

  • Provide a monthly report of Project ASK! activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Member Services Committee;
  • Recruit mentors and mentees at conferences, regional events, as well as through email, phone, or social media communication;
  • Work with the Student Council Mentorship Program Chair to pair mentors with interested mentees; 
  • Communicate monthly with Student Council Mentorship Program Chair to discuss objectives, goals, and progress;
  • Collect and track data to show mentor-mentee matches and the corresponding demographics;
  • Collaborate with the Student Council Mentorship Program Chair to generate an annual report that shows program statistics, and distribute mentee surveys in order to obtain participant feedback;  
  • Provide a monthly report of activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Member Services Committee
  • Recruit Resident mock interviewers and medical students at conferences, regional events, as well as through email, phone or social media communication;
  • Match interview-interviewees together and connect them through a connection email or communication
  • Collect and track data to show interviewer-interviewee matches and the corresponding demographics;
  • Generate an annual report and distribute interviewer-interviewee surveys in order to obtain participant feedback;  
  • Provide a monthly report of activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Member Services Committee
  • Correspond with fellowship programs to obtain a fellowship spotlight.  Spotlights are defined as a 500-word or less description of the fellowship program written in any style/format of the program representative’s choice;
  • Obtain appropriate media (ie: Pictures or videos) for distribution with the Program Spotlight;
  • Communicate with and submit completed spotlights to the Newsletter Chair for publication in the monthly Resident Newsletter;
  • Maintain any past spotlights and media in an organized manner for archival on the AOCPMR website if provided approval by the author; 
  • Provide publication announcement to the appropriate author with identification of “non-peer reviewed” citation; and
  • Provide a monthly report of activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Member Services Committee
  • Collect the applications for the Rob Gotlin Community Leadership Grant
  • Work with the Resident Liaison on the AOCPMR Executive Council in selecting the grant winner
  • Provide a monthly report of activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Education Committee
  • Work with the mid-year meeting, media liaison, and membership chairs to support existing projects and develop new projects;
  • Provide a monthly report of activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Education Committee
  • Oversee and assist with the vision, planning, development and implementation of educational materials primarily for residents, but this may include for members of the college at large.  Focus on materials accessible through online platforms or electronic applications, examples include but are not limited to videos, podcasts, journal club, OMT video series, PDF resources, etc.;
  • Participate in Resident Council meetings and, as applicable, organize or attend relevant breakout teleconferences; and
  • Provide a monthly report of activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Education Committee;
  • Update and maintain the “living” document of the fellowship database on a yearly basis;
  • Focus on improving marketability of Resident members to fellowships, this may include being a resource for the following:  
  1. Help Residents identify types of PM&R fellowships offered, where those fellowship are offered, and what types of considerations are to be made with each of these fellowships;
  2. Provide residents with resources for CV improvement, interview preparation, etc.; 
  • Compile a list of all AOCPMR members who have completed a fellowship for purposes of mentorship or contact;
  • Provide a monthly report of activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Education Committee
  • Ensure that lectures pertinent for Residents are included at the Mid-Year Meeting;  
  • Work with the AOCPMR Executive Council Mid-Year Meeting Chair and Student Council Mid-Year Meeting Chair in the creation of educational programming; 
  • Assist the AOCPMR Executive Council Mid-Year Meeting Chair and Student Conference Mid-Year Meeting Chair with organization of a Resident, Fellowship, Research and/or Job Fair(s) as applicable for the Mid-Year Meeting;
  • Have the potential to provide an educational lecture for the Student Conference tract at the Mid-Year Meeting; 
  • Participate in Resident Council meetings and, as applicable Executive and Student Council Mid-Year Meeting planning and breakout teleconferences; 
  • Provide a monthly report of activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Media Committee
  • Work with Executive Director and Webmaster to manage and maximize appearance and accuracy of content on the website, ensure that content on website is formatted in user-friendly fashion, relevant, and up-to-date;
  • Work with the Residency Council to continuously improve web-presence, bring material up to date and ensure accessibility of forms and applications; and 
  • Provide a monthly report of activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
  • Serve as part of the Resident Council Media Committee
  • Work to ensure that content on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter is formatted in user-friendly fashion, that content is correct, that contents is relevant, and that content is up-to-date;
  • Ensure that outdated material is promptly removed from social media channels including flyers for upcoming events that have passed;
  • Create advertisements in conjunction with other Resident Council Committee Chairs for events and programs sponsored by each committee;
  • Attend Resident Council meetings & conference calls as well as coordinate changes with the Website Committee; and
  • Provide a monthly report of activity to the Executive Committee bringing up all pertinent issues, concerns, and updates.
